MUFC v KCU Barbarians
A spirited KCU Barbarians handed Manukau United their first defeat at Stade de Manakau. The result leaves Manakau United Football Team as Runners-Up in Division 3.
Overnight rain had left the Manakau Domain heavy under foot presenting difficulties for players to play controlled football.
Both teams started positively and entertained the local crowd with some flowing football. The young KCU midfield showed speed but the more experienced midfield combination of Mike Urlich and Peter Rowe kept them at bay as KCU pushed to open the scoring. At the other end both Atain Hally and Shaan Eagle went close in a pulsating opening half hour to match.
The opening goal came from a KCU corner. Keeper Paddy Sanazzaro, returning after an injury break claimed the ball under pressure only for it to come free and be bundled into the net by the joyous KCU players.
The second half opened at a brisk pace with MUFC pushing hard to equalize. Mike Urlich striding forward pushed the defence to the edge of the box where the ball fell free to Jamie Allcock who struck the ball into the corner of the net. His second followed shortly afterwards with a header from a perfect cross delivered by Shaan Eagle.
The game opened up and chances fell to both KCU and MUFC. The ever present Peter Rowe providing a telling pass to release Shaan Eagle who drew an excellent save from the Barbarians keeper.
KCU were never out of the game and continued to press forward. The pressure resulted in a well taken equalizer from the edge of the box giving Sanazzaro no chance.
Both teams were now pressing for the winner and sadly for the Manakau team and supporters it was KCU who took their chance. Speed of youth playing a major part as they broke through the defence leaving one on one and again giving the keeper no chance with a clinical finish.
Willie West summed up in his after match speech at the Manakau Hotel what a wonderful first league season it had been and what a good game it was. ‘To finish 2nd in our first year is great. Well done to KCU for taking part in a great game, played in good spirit, with neither team wanting to give an inch.’
MUFC now look forward to the Knock Out stage of the competition where they have been drawn in Group 3. They will play Otaki Purutaitama, Waikanae Geezers, KCU 3rds & Pakakariki Harlequins.
This week sees Manakau with a bye, so watch this space for an update and further information about upcoming games.

Saturday 17th July sees the final league game of the season for Manakau United Football Club. Playing against KCU Barbarians will be a tough task with the Division Three title hanging on the result. Victory will see MUFC winning division 3 in their inaugural year. Any other result will leave the players chewing on their nails waiting to hear the outcome of other games. Both Waikanae Masters and Otaki Combined can overhaul MUFC if results go their way.
It has been a great first season for the new team. Brothers Ben and Kimbal McHugo along with generous support from the community, local businesses and players have certainly developed a club atmosphere. Nowhere better can this be seen than at the team sponsors, Manakau Hotel, where publican and midfield stalwart Peter …. enjoys mulling over the game with the team, opposition, referees and supporters.
On Saturday we hope the Stade de Manakau - Manakau Domain will be buzzing with local supporters anticipating another great chapter in the short story that has been Manukau United Football Club, so far.
As usual ‘The Wives of Manakau United’ will host a BBQ at the game. Win, lose or draw you are invited to the after match at The Manakau Hotel.
MUFC offer thanks to the league organizers, local clubs who have loaned goals, kit and training facilities and to everyone involved in getting the club off the ground.

Paekakariki Harlequins v MUFC
A successful penalty with the final kick of the game by Mike Urlich wasn't enough to give MUFC a share of the points in this entertaining match.
MUFC entered the game with a depleted squad and injuries being carried by key players. This should not detract from the way Paekakariki attacked from the opening whistle. Playing into the wind, most of the early attacking was by the Harlequins. They turned possession into an early lead following a corner that the Manakau defence failed to clear.
MUFC started to settle and played some tidy football. The midfield again holding strong on a difficult surface. Playing in the unusual position, up front, Willie West came close to scoring with a ferocious drive. Paekakariki held out until half time.
Half time brought changes to the Manakau outfit. Ben McHugo donned the goalkeepers jersey and Jamie Allcock returned to the outfield. Within a few minutes of the restart Manuka had leveled courtesy of a well taken goal by Cam. Mike Urlich took the ball into the Harlequins area where he was tackled but only for the ball to fall at Cams feet who calmly slotted it past the advancing keeper. More pressure from Manakau called the Paekakariki keeper into action, making a couple of fine saves following attacking football by the vistors.
Chasing the game left Manakau suspect to the break and Paekakariki managed to exploit this for their second goal. A third followed a corner and the points looked secure for the Harlequins. MUFC showed spirit and were awarded a penalty late in the game which was succesfully converted by Mike Urlich. However, it was not to be Manakaus day and the home crowd cheered as the final whistle blew at Campbell Park. Paekakariki 3, Manakau 2.
