2011 Sannazzaro Shield - Veterans win 3-2

Manakau Football Club 2011 Sannazzaro Shield Participants
Age and Experience proved to be more than a match for Youth in the Sannazzaro Shield match played to bring down the curtain on the 2011 Football season for Manakau FC as the Veterans outlasted the "kids" to win 3-2.

The players arrived at the Manakau Domain in a rather haphazard fashion, and as usual  it was mainly the "youngsters" who were late to the game, as evidenced by the pre-match photograph where experience was obviously to the fore.

A quick arrangement of the sides determined that the cutoff age for the two sides was about 31-32 years, and even then the "youngsters" were down to the bare minimum of 11 players and an empty bench.

That suited the Vets just fine and after a settling down period of play, James Wylie grabbed the only goal of the first half to give the Veterans a 1-0 halftime lead - while Vets goalkeeper Chris Georgetti saved a penalty from Atain Halley - after a dodgy refereeing decision.

In the second half the goals from Brian, and Jamie Lamplough gave the Vets a 3-0 lead before another Vets goal was ruled out - for a rather minor reason ... it was the referee who had provided the cross!

Towards the end the youngsters got a goal back via Mark Tiumalu-Faleseuga, and right at the final whistle the referee tried to balance the books awarding another dodgy, dodgy penalty which Atain this time converted.

A quick word with the referee ensured that the final whistle occured fairly shortly afterwards and the Veterans claimed the inaugural Sannazzaro Shield by a 4-2 ... ahem ... 3-2 scoreline.

Man of the Match : Vets goalkeeper Chris Georgetti

2011 Awards - Player of the Year - Paul Kulhavy

Paul Kulhavy dusted off the old football boots and got back onto the park, and #46 played a key role in the Manakau Hui Mai's midfield in 2011 - winning Player of the Year.

He wasn’t the fastest midfielder, but PK's skills lay in an ability to read the game, close off lanes, mark his man, and anticipate opposition plays, in order to make sure that Manakau dominated the centre of the pitch.

Although rarely seen in attack, PK did manage to get forward for corners and scored a couple of goals with his head when the opponents weren't looking the right way.

2011 Awards - Player of the Year - Ben Henry

Ben Henry had an outstanding football season in 2011 for Manakau FC's Hotel side and he was rewarded with the  Player of the Year shield at the recent awards night.

Ben was a fixture in the Hotel side throughout the season, and displayed an ability to strike from distance, typified by a stunning goal he scored from the edge of the penalty area against Levin at Donnelly Park in June.

A well deserved award for a top player!

2011 Awards - Players Player of the Year - Mark Tiumalu-Faleseuga

Manakau Hui-Mai had an extremely strong defensive line-up this season - and holding it all together at centre-back was Mark Tiumalu-Faleseuga who was a rock.

Solid in the air, strong in the tackle, and very quick when he needed to be, Mark simply made sure that the opposing centre-forwards had little chance of ever seeing the football during the game.

So it was no surprise that his team-mates voted Mark the Hui Mai 2011 Players Player of the Year.

2011 Awards - Players Player of the Year - Simon Ryding

Manakau Hotel's stylish centre-back Simon Ryding was the popular choice for Players' Player of the year for the division three side.

Simon started the season well with three man-of-the-match performances during May, and his efforts all over the pitch were acknowledged in the team votes for this award.

Simon was also a regular at the post-match functions, and if even HALF of his stories about what happened on the pitch were true then Manakau may have found the new Franz Beckenbauer.

Well played Sir!

2011 Awards - Find of the Year - Chris Temperton

Chris "Crash" Temperton was outstanding in defence during 2011 and was an obvious choice for the "Find of The Year" is his debut season of football.

Crash only started playing football this year - and immediately made himself an indispensable member of the Hui Mai defensive back four with his tenacious defending and uncanny ability to pick the right time to make the tackle.

Chris also showed an ability to get forward and create goalscoring chances for his team mates, and was responsible for four assists this season.

Given the huge progress made in 2011, it would not be a surprise to see Crash take his football to the next level in 2012, and start getting his name on the scoresheet as well.

2011 Awards - Young Player of the Year - Brixton Cowie

Manakau United have a number of quality young players coming into the two sides, but BRIXTON COWIE was one player stood out as the "one to watch" for 2012.

We knew that Brixton was a bit special when he took on and actually beat Kimbal McHugo TWICE during the evening kickabouts at pre-season training - and he backed that up with some great goals in the first six games of the season.

A bad injury ended Brixton's season this year - but I'm sure that by mid-January 2012 he will be back down the park embarrassing all the old guys at practice.

2011 Awards - Best Youth Player - Murray Haughey

Outstanding youth player Murray Haughey capped off his first season of football for Manakau United FC by winning the Best Youth Player award for the division three Hotel side.

Murray's talent for the game is obvious, and as the season progressed Murray's influence on matches also grew, highlighted by a golden patch mid-season when Murray was player of the day twice in a fortnight.

If Murray can get fit enough during the off-season to allow him to play for 90 minutes then he's going to be a real handful for opposing sides in 2012.

2011 Awards - Golden Boot - Atain Halley

Atain Halley was the runaway Golden Boot for Manakau FC's  Hui Mai team in 2011 - scoring 21 league goals in 15 matches ... and a couple more goals in the HK Cup as well.

Atain scored in 13 of his 15 HK Division Two league games, and picked up three hat-tricks during the season as he showed an uncanny ability to break away from defenders and score goals at crucial times.

Atain is off to Southland next season where he will be playing for Old Boys AFC of Invercargill - and his scoring boots will be tough ones to fill for Manakau.

2011 Awards - Golden Boot - Josh Sannazzaro

Josh Sannazzaro proved to be a worthy addition to the Manakau United FC Hotel side in 2011, leading all scorers in the third division team to claim the Golden Boot.

Josh's all action style created chances upfront for both himself and his team-mates.

His first goal was a late winner at the Manakau Domain to help the Hotel side beat Waikanae Youth 6-5 back in June and he followed that up with a blistering 25 yard effort against KCU 4ths just a week later.

Plate Q/F - Paekakariki A 1-5 Manakau United

Atain Halley and James Hoskins both scored twice as Manakau United outclassed Paekakariki A to win their HK Plate quarter-final clash 5-1 at Mazengarb Park on Saturday afternoon.

Paekakariki took an early lead in the game when a long range effort deceived Manakau’s Paddy Sannazzaro in goal – and just managed to trickle over the line to score – but Manakau came storming back to dominate the game thereafter.

Manakau penned Paekakariki back in their own half for long periods of the first half but, despite a barrage of shots and corners, it looked like Paekak would escape with their goal intact until Hoskins popped up in the penalty area just before halftime to powerfully shoot home a measured cross from Gavin Saunders.

With the score line tied at 1-1 at halftime the stage was set for a tense second half, but Manakau tore the game open with four more goals in 15 minutes to put the result beyond doubt.

Halley ran onto a through ball to lash home the second goal, and then profited from another good pass to add the third goal just 5 minutes later. A fourth goal soon followed squeezing through a forest of legs, and Hoskins added the fifth goal on the hour mark, pouncing on a loose ball in the six yard box to score his second of the match.

There were countless other chances as Manakau continued to attack but the score line remained 5-1 through until the final whistle.

Bowl Q/F - Waikanae Youth 4-1 Manakau Hotel

Manakau Hotel gave a brave performance in the HK Bowl competition, taking the lead against the highly ranked Waikanae Youth side, before bowing out 1-4.

The opening 45 minutes was a very competitive affair, and both sides created chances, but the game remained scoreless at the halftime interval. Manakau broke the deadlock early in the second half scoring through James Wylie, but Waikanae responded almost immediately to level the scores.

The quick equaliser lifted Waikanae who raised their game during the second spell and eventually the tiring legs of the Manakau side could not keep the youngsters out – although it must be mentioned that the “Youth” side did need to bring on a couple of “dads” to finish the job.

Waikanae were worthy 4-1 winners in the end – but Manakau had certainly played a big part in a very good match.

HK Cup : Manakau United 1-0 Paekakariki Harlequins

Manakau United kept their seasons unbeaten streak at the Manakau Domain going with a 1-0 victory over Paekakariki Harlequins in the second round of Horowhenua Kapiti Cup action on Saturday afternoon.

The Harlequins came into the game on the back of an 1-0 victory over 1st division Levin reserves last weekend and had their own 10-match unbeaten streak, but found the going tough against Manakau.

Manakau totally dominated the first half of the match, using the breeze to good advantage to play almost all of the opening 45 minutes in Paekakariki’s half, however the visitors were very solid in defence, and the match remained scoreless at halftime.

It was more of the same in the second half, with Manakau dominant throughout, and eventually the experienced Mike Urlich found a way through the tenacious Paekak defence to score the only goal of the game on the hour mark with a 10 yard shot that sped past the goalkeeper.

James Hoskins picked up the man of the match award for Manakau with an energetic display in the centre of the park, with Urlich and Chris Temperton also influential.

HK Cup : First Round Grading Games

The Manakau United football club did not meet with the best of success in the opening grading round of the Horowhenua-Kapiti Cup over the weekend – coming up short against higher ranked opposition in both matches.

Playing at the Manakau Domain, the 3rd Division Manakau Hotel team faced 2nd Division Levin Sports and found the going tough against the visitors who were fitter and faster to the loose ball. James Wylie and Craig Vidulich got on the score sheet for Manakau, but Levin were always in control and ran out 6-2 winners.

In the other match, Manakau Hui Mai travelled to Otaki’s Haruatai Park to face 1st Division Otaki and the match turned out to be a hard-fought affair with goal scoring chances at a premium at both ends of the pitch.

Otaki grabbed the lead midway through the first half, pouncing on a loose ball in the penalty area and smashing it home but there was little to choose between the sides. Manakau pressed hard in the second half with Jackson Murray and Jamie Allcock standing out but the Otaki defence stood firm to claim a narrow 1-0 win.

The Cup continues with two more rounds of grading games before the knockout phase begins on September 10th.

Division Three : Otaki Combined 5-3 Manakau Hotel

Manakau Hotel played an entertaining 90 minutes of football against unbeaten Otaki, but were not quite able to pull off the shock result, going down 3-5.

Otaki started very well, and scored freely in the first half running out to a 4-1 lead by the time the teams turned around. However, Manakau gave as good as they got in the second period, scoring two good goals and giving Otaki a solid challenge.

(End of season celebrations at the Manakau Bowls and Sports Club prevented your correspondent getting a more detailed report of this game - and Simon Ryding and Josh Sannazzaro failed to deliver on their promise of a match report)

Division Two : Manakau United 5-0 Paekakariki

Manakau United closed out their division two league season with a comfortable 5-0 win over Paekakariki at the Manakau Domain on Saturday.

Manakau’s striker Atain Halley was dominant in the first half, grabbing a hat-trick before halftime with a combination of pace and skill in the opening 45 minutes.

Halley opened the scoring the 8th minute, collecting a through ball and sidefooting it past the keeper, and made it 2-0 after 25 minutes when he curled in a clever free-kick from the edge of the penalty area that left the Paekak goalkeeper standing rooted to the spot.

Gavin Saunders provided the assist for the 3rd goal, slipping a pass into the box and Halley weaved past two defenders before calmly shooting into the net just before the break.

Saunders was instrumental in the 4th Manakau goal as well, delivering a well flighted corner that Paul Kulhavy nodded past the static visitors defence and into the goal – while Mike Urlich wrapped up the scoring late on running past his defender and then drilling the ball into the net.

Chris Reed put in an energetic display up front getting involved in a lot of play, while Willie West and Mark Tiumalu-Faleseuga were outstanding in defence, and took opportunities to get forward and use their pace on several occasions.

The Manakau Hui Mai side just missed out on winning the league – ending with a 12-2-2 record for second spot and possible promotion to Division One - a very good effort after winning promotion to Division Two last season.

Last league fixtures for the season

The last league game of the Horowhenua-Kapiti football season is here - although we will then go straight into HK cup action next weekend.

In division two, Manakau Hui Mai will host Paekakariki at the Manakau Domain at 2:30pm, and we might see a strengthened Paekakariki side visiting as the first division team is not playing this weekend.

In Division Three, Manakau Hotel travel to face Otaki Combined at 2:30, and the game has been transferred to Haruatai S2 - meet up at the Manakau pub at 1:40pm for travel.

Division Two : Levin Sports 2-0 Manakau United

Levin Sports took their chances to beat Manakau United 2-0 at Donnelly Park in a Division Two Horowhenua-Kapiti football match.

Manakau made most of the running in the first half, but could not break through a solid Levin rearguard and Levin Sports made the visitors pay by scoring just before halftime when an angled shot squirmed through the Manakau keepers legs to score.

The pattern was repeated in the second half, with Manakau pressing but unable to get the equalising goal, and Levin scoring again on a quick counter attack and a long-range shot that took a deflection off a Manakau defender and looped into the net.

There was no way back for Manakau after that despite a huge effort and Levin finished as well deserved winners on the day.

Chris Temperton picked up the player of the day award for another full-on effort.

Division Three : Manakau Hotel 2-1 Levin Vets

A 90th minute goal from Ben McHugo gave Manakau Hotel a 2-1 victory over the Levin Vets at the Manakau Domain on Saturday afternoon.

Manakau took the lead midway through the first half when Craig Vidulich ran onto an angled pass and drilled the ball past the Levin goalkeeper to open the scoring – but Levin fought back and equalised to make the score 1-1 just before halftime.

The second half was an end-to-end affair, but despite chances at both ends it looked like the teams would have to split the points until Josh Sannazzaro chipped a pass through to McHugo who smashed a shot that sped into the goal from outside the penalty area to claim a well-celebrated winner.

McHugo picked up the player of the day award for his solid efforts in midfield – and that last minute goal.

Division Two : Manakau United 3-1 Kapiti Coast United

Manakau United outlasted a physical Kapiti Coast United side to come out with a 3-1 victory in a Horowhenua-Kapiti Division Two Football match at the Manakau Domain on Saturday Afternoon.

Gavin Saunders put Manakau ahead in the 22nd minute with an angled cross-shot from the right flank to open the scoring and Kimbal McHugo doubled the lead just before half-time when his cleverly flighted free-kick eluded the KCU goalkeeper and sailed into the net.

Manakau had to withstand a testing opponent, but as the match wore on the energy of several youngsters came to the fore with Jackson Murray and James Hoskins in particular creating several opportunities with energetic running into space.

Midway through the second half, Atain Halley latched onto a pass from Saunders to shoot home and make the score 3-0 before KCU scored a consolation goal in the dying moments of the match.

Man of the match deservedly went to Gavin Saunders, with the big man providing a real spark down the right hand side.

Division Three : Kapiti Coast Barbarians 6-1 Manakau Hotel

In Division Three, top-of-the-table KCU Barbarians continued on their winning way, beating Manakau Hotel 6-1 after leading 4-0 at halftime.

The Barbarians were the better side throughout, but the Manakau Hotel side kept on battling and were rewarded for their afternoons efforts with a fine goal from Craig Vidulich.

Stalwart defender Andrew Peita picked up the player of the day award for this outstanding efforts in the rearguard all day.

Division Two : Waikanae Leaders 1-2 Manakau United

Manakau United kept up their challenge for the Division 2 title with a 2-1 win over Waikanae Leaders at Jim Cooke Park.

Manakau were on top throughout the game, and scored early on when Mike Urlich side-footed home a cross from Atain Halley, but for the rest of the match found young Waikanae goalkeeper Sam Adams a tough man to beat.

The back four were keeping Waikanae quiet with Kimbal McHugo and Mark Tiumalu-Faleseuga keeping very tight while both Chris Templeton and Wille West were using the flanks well to add some pace into the attack.

A second half goal from Halley after good build-up work by James Hoskins gave Manakau a two-goal lead, but try as they might Manakau could not get a 3rd goal as Urlich, Hoskins, Halley and Paul Kulhavy all had goal-bound efforts superbly saved by the busy Adams who picked up the man of the match award for his efforts.

Waikanae kept trying and pulled a goal back just before the end of the match, but Manakau had done just enough to claim the win.

Division Three : Manakau Hotel 1-3 Waikanae Youth

Manakau Hotel faced top side Waikanae Youth, and gave a very good account of themselves before the youngsters ran out 3-1 winners.

Waikanae scored three goals in the first half to effectively decide the match by halftime but the improving Mamakau Hotel team put together a very competitive second half passing well and keeping possession.

Ben Henry almost scored when he hit a thunderous free-kick that was only just pushed over the bar by the Waikanae goalkeeper.

But Manakau were rewarded for their efforts with a fine goal as a corner by Ben Henry was met with a fierce volley by Jamie Lamplough that sped into the net.

Man of the match was Manakau goalkeeper Chris Georgetti, who displayed a full range of goalkeeping skills to keep his side in the game.

Division Two : Manakau United 2-1 Waikanae 3rds

Manakau United and Waikanae clashed in a closely-fought encounter at the Manakau Domain on Saturday, with the home side scoring a late goal to come out on top 2-1.
The first half was a tightly matched tussle with most of the play around the halfway line as both defences held their lines well and kept attacking chances to a minimum.

The centre-back pairing of Kimbal McHugo and Mark Tiumalu-Faleseuga kept Waikanae quiet all day, while Jackson Murray and Chris Temperton were outstanding on the flanks.

However, the game started to open up in the second period as legs began to tire, and Manakau grabbed the lead on the hour mark after good build up play from Jackson Murray and Mike Urlich set up a chance for Atain Halley who scored with a clinical finish.

It looked that that might be enough to win the game, as Manakau continued to defend tightly, but Waikanae equalised from a free-kick with 15 minutes to go with a well flighted shot that curled over the defensive wall.

Manakau pushed forward looking for the winning goal and Urlich was unlucky to see a shot come off the post, before Halley popped up in the penalty area to score the winning goal with just 5 minutes remaining.

The man of the match award went to right back Chris Temperton who was outstanding in the tackle all day, and provided an injection of pace when coming forward as well.

Division Three : Paekakariki 3-0 Manakau Hotel

Paekakariki Harlequins proved to be the better side in a Horowhenua-Kapiti Division Three football match contested at Mazengarb Park on Saturday afternoon.

Paekakariki produced a good display of passing football especially in the first half, and scored a couple of well worked goals before the break to take a stranglehold on the game.

The second half was a more even affair, with Manakau creating a couple of chances, but the only scoring was a late own-goal which stretched the Paekak lead to three goals.

Despite the 3-0 loss, Manakau United’s goalkeeper Chris Georgetti impressed with a good all-round display, including a couple of fine saves in 1-on-1 situations to keep his side in the game, and picked up the man-of-the-match award.

Enjoy the free weekend lads.

Division Two : Levin Masters 3-2 Manakau United Hui Mai

Levin Masters produced their best performance of the season to beat Manakau United Hui Mai 3-2 in a quality game of football at Donnelly Park.

Top-of-the-table Manakau started strongest and opened the scoring when Paul Kulhavy slotted a through ball to Gavin Saunders, and Saunders delivered a perfect cross to the back post for Mike Urlich to head home.

But Levin had a spark about their play and equalised two minutes later when Tony Sheridan cut inside from the left wing and hit a shot from the edge of the box that squeezed under Manakau keeper Paddy Sannazzaro for the equaliser.

And five minutes later Levin had taken the lead when a deep curling free-kick from Justin Greig took an unfortunate deflection off Kimbal McHugo and flew into the goal just inside the far post.

Manakau searched hard for an equaliser before halftime, with Atain Halley close on several occasions, while Kulhavy hit the crossbar with a close range effort and James Hoskins was denied by a great save from Levin keeper Keegan McLaclian just before halftime.

In the second half Manakau did finally get a reward for the efforts, with Hoskins and Saunders combining to create a chance that Urlich snapped up with a quality finish to level the scores at 2-2.

Unfortunately, Jamie Allcock picked up an injury and had to come off at that stage, a real blow to Manakau as the big man had led the forward line well, and the Manakau substitutes bench was rather thin this weekend.

The game turned into a real end-to-end affair, with chances at both ends, and the winning goal was a stunning strike with Joel Nugteren controlling a pass 25 yards out and hitting a fierce curling shot into the bottom right hand corner of the net to give Levin a 3-2 lead.

Manakau poured forward to try and rescue a point with 10 minutes remaining, but despite a couple of close efforts the determined defending from Levin ensured that it was the home side that would take all the points.

Levin’s player of the day was young keeper Keegan McLaclian, while Manakau nominated their midfield pairing of Mike Urlich and Paul Kulhavy as their standout players.

Division Three : KCU 4ths 3-2 Manakau United Hotel

Kapiti Coast United outlasted Manakau Hotel to win 3-2 in a tight encounter at Weka Park on Saturday afternoon.

KCU took a lead in the first half, before Manakau equalised with a well taken goal from Jamie Lamplough to go into the halftime break level.

Kapiti also struck first in the 2nd half to grab a 2-1 lead, but Manakau found a reply through Josh Sannazzaro who received the ball 25 yards out and beat a defender before striking a fierce shot that sped past the keeper and dipped under the crossbar to level the scores.

Both sides then went in search of the winning goal and it was KCU who scored the winner with just a few minutes left, finishing off a quick counter-attack to claim the victory.

Josh Sannazzaro picked up the man-of-the match award for Manakau for his efforts upfront, while Chris Henry and Jamie Lamplough also impressed with solid efforts.

Friday Night Flatwarming? WTF?

Which Manakau United central defender decided to have a Friday night flatwarming - and then get so hammered that he was unable to turn up to the game (even to watch) on Saturday afternoon?

To give you a clue - he shares his flat with Hosso - and Hosso also looked decidedly pale at times during Saturday's match.

Lucky for you both we won - next time what about scheduling the party for SATURDAY night - and inviting the team along?

Division Three : Manakau Hotel 6-5 Waikanae Youth

A late goal from Josh Sannazzaro gave Manakau United a 6-5 victory over Waikanae Youth in a goal-filled encounter at the Manakau Domain.

The match started slowly with both sides taking time to come to terms with the game, but once the first goal was scored the shots started to rain in on goal from all angles.

The lead see-sawed throughout the match with both sides holding the lead on three separate occasions. Manakau scored first, but Waikanae had taken a 2-1 lead by halftime.

The second half saw Manakau go 3-2 ahead, but Waikanae found more goals and led 4-3, and then 5-4 before the game was locked up at 5-all with 10 minutes to play. That was when Sannazzaro’s strike from close range in the 85th minute finally settled the match in favour of the home side.

Murray Haughey was named Manakau’s man of the match for another skilful performance up front, scoring one goal and having involvement in several others.

Division Two : Manakau United 4-0 Waikanae Masters

Manakau United enjoyed a successful return to a sunny Manakau Domain by scoring four unanswered goals to defeat an experienced Waikanae Masters side 4-0 on Saturday.

Atain Halley opened the scoring in the first half, running onto a ball and hitting a powerful shot into the bottom left hand corner of the goal to put Manakau 1-0 up after 15 minutes.

Waikanae threatened on occasion, and Manakau goalkeeper Paddy Sannazzaro had to react quickly to block a shot in a 1-on-1 situation to make a fine save but Sannazzaro took a heavy knock as a result and had to be replaced.

Ten minutes later the score became 2-0 after Halley created space for another shot which was partially blocked by the Waikanae keeper, but midfielder Mike Urlich was following up to ram the rebound home. Just before halftime Halley made it 3-0, scoring from the penalty spot after he had been fouled inside the penalty area.

In the second half, Manakau defenders Willie West and Chris Temperton both managed to impress when going forward, but it was Urlich who wrapped up the scoring midway through the second half, getting on the end of a fine cross from Gavin Saunders and volleying the ball to score with some aplomb leaving the Waikanae defenders with no chance.

Manakau’s man of the match was Paul Kulhavy, who put in a strong 90 minute effort in winning a lot of ball in midfield to provide an attacking platform.

Division Two : Waikanae Geezers 1-2 Manakau United

Manakau United won this top-of-the-table clash at Jim Cooke Park, beating Waikanae Geezers 2-1 to open up a three point lead in Horowhenua Football’s Division Two standings.

The game was a closely fought affair throughout, and despite the heavy pitch both teams were moving the ball around well as they probed for additional scoring opportunities.

Manakau dominated the early minutes of the match, creating several half-chances but it wasn’t until the half-hour mark that Jamie Allcock broke into the penalty area and worked his way to the bye-line before cutting the ball back to where Mike Urlich was on hand to force the ball home to open the scoring for the visitors.

It was Manakau who made the next breakthrough as well, when Atain Halley latched onto the through ball from halfway, and shook off the desperate challenge of the last defender before taking the ball into the goal area and slotting the ball past the stranded Waikanae goalkeeper to make the score 2-0 to Manakau.
Peter Rowe in action

With twenty minutes to go, Waikanae were handed a lifeline, literally, when a loose ball struck the hand of Manakau sweeper Kimball McHugo and the referee pointed to the spot for a penalty kick which Waikanae converted to close the score line to 2-1.

But Manakau held firm during the closing minutes, and earned three vital points.

Midfielder Peter Rowe, who was playing his final game for Manakau before heading off to Perth, picked up man of the match honours with a cultured display of passing.

Division Three : Manakau Hotel 1-2 Waikanae Strollers

Waikanae Strollers travelled up to the Manakau Domain, and put on a solid display of passing football to claim their first win of the season beating Manakau Hotel 2-1.

After a scoreless first half it was Waikanae player Will Reardon who broke the deadlock 10 minutes into the second period with a fine run that took him past several Manakau defenders, and Reardon then struck a solid shot into the bottom left hand corner of the net.

The Strollers then extended their lead when Reardon sent in cross from the right and Rob Burrows was on hand to score and give Waikanae a 2-0 lead.

Manakau’s James Wylie closed the gap when he grabbed a fine goal with a couple of minutes remaining, volleying home a snapshot from 20 yards out to give the home supporters in the clubhouse something well worth cheering about.

There was no time for an equaliser however, with Stollers claiming the win.

Manakau youngster Murray Haughey was awarded man of the match for the home side.

Division Two : Kapiti Coast United 2-2 Manakau United Hui Mai

Manakau United maintained an unbeaten start to the season with a hard-fought 2-2 draw against KCU at Weka Park on Saturday.

KCU brought an experienced line-up into the game, and started well, knocking the passes about freely during the opening spell.

But Manakau have a good mix of veterans and youngsters in the side this season, and it was the pace of Manakau’s teenage striker Atain Halley that provided the opening goal, as Halley sped away from his marker and slotted a powerful shot to give the visitors the lead.

Fifteen minutes later it was 2-0 to Manakau when Halley ran onto a through-ball from Peter Rowe and fired in on goal – and although the KCU keeper was able to parry the shot - he was unable to prevent Jamie Allcock from scoring from the rebound.

Just before halftime, Manakau almost struck again as Halley and fellow student Gavin Saunders combined well to rip through the static KCU defence, but Saunders close range shot was a couple of inches too high - grazing the crossbar as it skimmed over the top.

The second half saw a more forceful KCU side stack the midfield with a 5-man combination, and the tactical change worked, with the hosts started to dominate possession and territory.

Despite some good defending from Manakau, the pressure applied by the hosts eventually paid off with KCU scoring two goals from set-pieces, a free-kick and a corner, to tie the game up at 2-2. Both sides had chances to win the game in the last 15 minutes, but it was KCU who came closest to the winner, hitting the crossbar with the last move of the game.

A 2-2 draw was a fair result overall, and the point sees Manakau join Waikanae at the top of the Division Two standings, setting up a top of the table clash next weekend – scheduled for Jim Cooke Park.

Division Three : Manakau Hotel 0-4 Otaki Combined

Manakau United took on a strong Otaki Combined side at Manakau Domain and found the task too tough with Otaki running out 4-0 winners.

The rain was pelting down at the Domain for much of the match, but both sides were still able to produce some good passing movements and both teams created goal chances, but it was Otaki who were sharper in front of goal, scoring four goals before halftime to seal the result.

The second half was a more even encounter, and Manakau’s man of the match Chris Henry in particular showed some good touches in midfield and working hard for the hosts.

Division Two : Manakau Hui Mai 5-3 Levin Sports

Jamie Allcock marked his return to the side with two goals as Manakau United beat Levin Sports 5-3 in a remarkable game at the Manakau Domain.

The hosts dominated the opening 45 minutes, and James Hoskins opened the scoring after 20 minutes with a solid shot from 12 yards out that the Levin keeper could only parry into the net.

Then Paul Kulhavy headered home a perfectly flighted corner from Peter Rowe to make it 2-0, and Allcock was on hand to make it 3-0 before halftime, providing a fierce stooping header to a cross from Hoskins.

When Allcock put Manakau 4-0 in front from the penalty spot on the hour mark it seemed the game was over, but Levin Sports roared back into the match and quickly scored twice in five minutes to throw the visitors a lifeline.

Chris Reed, (pictured below), then settled Manakau’s nerves and wrapped up a win, by latching onto a loose ball in the Levin penalty area and thumping the ball home to make the score 5-2, but it was Levin Sports who scored the final goal of the game with a well worked move and a bullet-like finish.

Division Three : Levin Vets 2-2 Manakau Hotel

Manakau United were held to a 2-2 draw against Levin Vets after they conceded two second half goals at Donnelly Park.

Manakau looked to be heading for a victory for the first hour of the game as they took command of the match with a fine goal from Mike Urlich from 40 yards, and then a spectacular strike from Ben Henry from the edge of the penalty area.

But a two-goal lead can be a hard lead to hold, and as Manakau legs began to tire the Levin Vets climbed back into the match and were rewarded with a pair of goals that earned the hosts a point.

Simon Ryding continues his great run of form in the Manakau side, picking up his 3rd consecutive man of the match award at the Manakau Bowls and Sports clubrooms after the game.

Brixton Cowie leads Manakau to 5-0 victory over Paekakariki

Manakau United travelled to HK’s southernmost reaches and put on a solid display of passing football at Campbell Park to beat Paekakariki 5-0 and keep their league challenge going strong in division two.

The goals were spread around the team this weekend with five different players getting onto the scoresheet. It was the right hand side of the Manakau United side that was the dominant facet early on in the game with Gavin Saunders and Chris Temperton getting heavily involved in the play and creating plenty of moves.

Temperton stood out in the opening half hour with solid defensive work, while also getting forward to create assists for each of the first two goals, both expertly finished by Atain Halley and Kimbal McHugo.

Then it was youngster Brixton Cowie who scored the 3rd goal, demonstrating his range of footballing skills with a mazy run down the right flank and a quality chip over the Paekakariki goalkeeper from an oblique angle to cap a “man of the match” performance and hand Manakau a 3-0 halftime lead.

Unfortunately, the game was marred in the second half by a brutish incident, with an awful tackle on Cowie leaving the teenage midfielder writhing on the ground with a broken leg. A lengthy stoppage period ensured and both Paekakariki and Manakau had a player dismissed by the referee.

The match stuttered to conclusion thereafter, with Manakau goalkeeper Jamie Allcock stepping up with some fine saves to ensure a defensive clean sheet as Paekakariki looked to try and take advantage of the resulting re-organisation in the visitors line-up.

The subdued end to the game was livened by two more Manakau goals, with a well flighted cross- shot from Jackson Murray deceiving the defence to score , and a fierce drive from James Hoskins right before the end wrapping up the scoring.

A 5-0 win for Manakau then – the biggest victory of the season so far, but at the final whistle all thoughts were with the young Cowie who was taken to Wellington hospital by ambulance to have his leg reset.

Manakau Hui Mai edge to victory at the Domain

Manakau Hui Mai edge to victory at the Domain

Manakau United grabbed the only goal of the game at the Manakau Domain on Saturday afternoon to edge out a competitive Waikanae Leaders side and keep their unbeaten streak going. It was not a hugely entertaining game, with both teams closely matched throughout, and neither side able to maintain possession for long.

The first half was full of effort and endeavour, and the few chances that were created at either end were caused by pressuring and creating defensive lapses, rather than genuine creative play.

However, the Manakau team management did have a couple of aces up their sleeves on the substitutes roster, with Otaki College players Atain Halley and Jackson Murray starting on the bench after having already played a competitive game for their school earlier in the day.

The introduction of the students paid dividends just after halftime when a through ball from midfielder Paul Kulhavy reached Murray on the edge of the Waikanae area. Murray jinked inside his marker and although his shot was partially blocked it only fell as far as the lurking Halley, and the teenage striker made no mistake ramming his shot home from 12 yards.

Waikanae raised the tempo in an attempt to find an equaliser, but solid defensive work from Kimbal McHugo, Mark Tiumalu-Faleseuga and Chris Temperton generally kept a lid on Waikanae attackers and goalkeeper Paddy Sannazzaro handled the longer range shots and crosses quite comfortably.

At the attacking end for Manakau, Peter Rowe delivered a number of good crosses from set-pieces, and with time almost up Halley nearly made it 2-0 with a ferocious volley that was only kept out by a quality reflex save by the Waikanae goalkeeper.

But the score line stayed 1-0, a narrow win for the home side that keeps Manakau challenging near the top of Division Two.

In Division Three, the Manakau Hotel side faced a tough test against the top of the table Waikanae Youth side, and it proved to be a long hard afternoon as Waikanae ran out well deserved 5-0 winners.

Manakau did play with a lot of spirit however, with Simon Ryding putting in a man-of-the-match performance in the centre of defence, and note worthy efforts also coming from Chris Georgetti, and goalkeeper Chris Humpheys.

Manakau United manage the mud to win again

Manakau United Manage The Mud To Win Again

Manakau United travelled down State Highway One on Saturday afternoon, and outlasted at tenacious Waikanae side and a mud-pie of a pitch at Jim Cooke Park to win 3-2 and maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

A bright and breezy afternoon in Waikanae could not undo the damage that 48 hours of rain had done to the playing surface, with water ankle deep in places, and the mud already starting to “turn” before kickoff. But for the first twenty minutes of the game the players made light work of the conditions, scoring four goals in an entertaining period with some cracking goals included.

Firstly, Manakau striker Atain Halley ran onto a Paul Kulhavy through ball, and easily beat the Waikanae keeper to open the scoring, and five minutes later it was Halley who made the score 2-0 by converting a penalty awarded for handball.

However, Waikanae struck back quickly with two goals of their own, both goals coming from breaks down the left hand side, and hard driven crosses which were expertly finished giving Manakau no chance.

Then the mud started to play its part in proceedings, a cloying thick surface which made passing football a difficult task. Two players who did make the most of it were Chris Temperton and Nick Cudby on the right hand side of the park, as the pair put together a series of well worked moves in the first half to create some space.

But, no-one was able to rise above the mud for the rest of the first half, and although Manakau created a series of chances in the second half, some determined Waikanae clearances kept the game level with only 10 minutes to go.

That was until a Peter Rowe clearance found Halley on halfway, and the young striker flicked the ball on into the path of James Hoskins who collected the chance and sped through on goal. Hoskins slotted the ball past the stranded goalkeeper, and both sides watched as the shot clipped the inside of the right hand upright before finally resting in the back of the net.

That proved to be the decisive moment of the match – and Manakau held firm to claim a narrow 3-2 victory.

Manakau Hotel versus KCU United

In Division Three, the Manakau United “Hotel” side had a successful trip down to Weka Park, beating KCU United 6-1, to have a perfect record of three wins from three games.

Manakau Hui Mai versus Levin Masters

Halley Hat-trick powers Manakau United to Victory

A second half hat-trick from teenage striker Atain Halley proved to be the decisive factor at Manakau Domain on Saturday as Manakau United “Hui Mai” beat Levin Masters 3-1.

After the wet weather in mid-week, Horowhenua turned on a pristine autumn day on Saturday, and the Manakau Domain was picture perfect for a game of football. The first half proved to be a bit of an arm-wrestle between the two local clubs, with both sets of players probing for gaps in the defence but generally having to settle for long range shots that were comfortably handled by the goalkeepers, and halftime arrived with the game still scoreless.

The deadlock was broken 15 minutes into the second half when Halley ran onto a through-ball from Peter Rowe and calmly slotted his shot past the stationary Levin keeper to give Manakau the lead. That soon became 2-0 when some sterling work from midfielder Jackson Murray created another chance for Halley, and the youngster made no mistake placing his shot just inside the far post for the second goal of the day.

Levin reacted strongly to going two goals down, forcing the play, and it took some solid defensive work from brothers Ben McHugo and Kimbal McHugo to weather the storm of attacks. But Levin were not to be denied and with 15 minutes to go, the visiting side forced a corner that resulted in a well taken goal with a powerful header at the far post giving the Manakau defenders no chance to keep it out.

Game on then – or so it appeared – but it only took the lethal Murray / Halley combination 60 seconds to create a 3rd goal for Manakau, with Murray making a mazy run down the right hand side and providing a perfect cross for Halley to header home the final goal of the game.

With a two-goal lead restored, time ran down, and the referee’s final whistle was greeted with cheers from the country club’s supporters as their Manakau “Hui Mai” side remain unbeaten in Horowhenua Division Two league.

Waikanae Masters v Manakau Hui Mai

Manakau Master Wet Conditions To Beat Waikanae Masters

Manakau United Hui Mai took on the Waikanae Masters in Horowhenua’s Division Two football on Saturday afternoon and overcame a slow start and heavy rain to come out deserved 4-2 winners.

The forecast wet weather arrived at Waikanae’s Jim Cooke Park about an hour before kickoff, ensuring a slippery surface for the match, and plenty of goal action at both ends for the spectators. Waikanae took the lead within 30 seconds of starting the match, when a long range shot took an awkward bounce just in front of the Manakau goalkeeper Paddy Sannazzarro and skidded over his head and into the empty net for a freak opening goal.

Slowly, the visiting Manakau team started to click, and with Peter Rowe and Kimbal McHugo providing some telling passes, the travelling “Green and Whites” forced a couple of corners and it needed a series of good saves from the Waikanae goalie to keep the visitors out.

It was going to take something special to break Waikanae down, and that moment duly arrived on the half-hour mark when pint-sized midfielder Brixton Cowie received the ball on the left hand edge of the penalty area, and wriggled his way past two Waikanae defenders before chipping a shot across the goal and into the net via the far post.

Manakau had the bit between the teeth now, and five minutes later right-back Chris Templeton burst forward and hit a shot from 25 yards out that dipped and swerved like you see on TV, before crashing onto the left hand upright and being scrambled away by the Waikanae defence. But it was only a short reprieve as Manakau quickly forced another corner, and centre-back Mark Tiumalu-Faleseuga jumped highest to meet the cross and thunder a header powerfully into the top right-hand corner for the net for a quality goal to give Manakau a 2-1 halftime lead.

The second half started much like the first half, with Waikanae quickly onto attack, and within a couple of minutes Waikanae had equalised, pressuring the Manakau defence into giving the ball away cheaply too close to goal, and Waikanae hit a fierce shot that found its way into the goal. As the rain eased, the second half became a bit of an arm-wrestle, with the youthful Manakau attack creating a series of chances, but a combination of wayward finishing, and some desperate Waikanae defence, managed to keep the 2-2 scoreline intact through most of the second half.

Waikanae also created chances too, and Manakau keeper Sannazzarro used every inch of his height and his goalkeepers cap to parry away a close range header and Waikane looked to steal a late lead. However, in this battle between youth and experience, it was the teenage strike force that had the last word on Saturday, as Manakau fashioned two nicely taken goals in the last 10 minute to seal the 4-2 victory.

Firstly, Atain Halley provided an inch perfect pass for James Hoskins who controlled with one touch and calmly finished the move with his second touch slotting the ball past the Waikanae goalkeeper. Then, five minutes later the roles were reversed as Hoskins nodded a well-weighted header into the path of Halley who only needed one touch as he volleyed his shot fiercely past the stunned Waikanae keeper.

There was only a couple of minutes left to soak up, which was managed without too much issue, and the referee blew for full-time – handing Manakau Hui Mai their first win of the season – and making the short trip up State Highway #1 back to the Manakau Hotel an enjoyable ride.

Manakau Hotel

Manakau Hotel opened their campaign with a 3-2 victory over Waikanae Strollers at the weekend.

Here they are seen pre-match sporting their new kit.

Manakau Hui Mai v Waikanae Geezers

Manakau United Start With A Well-Earned Draw.

Manakau United started their season in Horowhenua Division Two with a battling 2-2 draw against the Waikanae Geezers in sunny conditions at Manakau Domain last Saturday afternoon.

he Division Two Manakau United 'Hui Mai' team took inspiration from the previous Manakau sporting teams that have borne the name to produce a spirited performance against an experienced Waikanae outfit that is expected to be one of the front runners this season.

And early on in the match, it was Manakau that were creating the best chances, and the home team were unfortunate to see an early 'goal' chalked off after the referee adjudged a close offside call after the ball hit the back of the net. Still, it was Manakau that did strike before halftime, with Kimbal McHugo grabbing the opening goal after cleverly using the sunny conditions to float a long-free kick into the Waikanae goal with the visiting keeper unsighted and unable to keep the ball out.

Manakau made it 2-0 early in the second half when teenage striker Atain Halley latched onto a through-ball, chipped one defender, and then calmly finished past the stranded Waikanae keeper.

However, Waikanae were not qutting, and for the last 30 minutes the experience and skills of the visitors showed through and Manakau were repeatedly forced into some desperate last ditch tackling and grim defence. With 20 minutes to go, Waikanae pulled a goal back, with the striker taking a quick pass and then cutting inside the last defender to beat the Manakau keeper Paddy Sannazzarro at the near post and score. It was harsh on the keeper who had produced some outstanding saves earlier in the match.

Waikanae surged forward seeking an equaliser, and put the tiring Manakau side under heavy pressure, which finally told when a corner was floated in and scrambled home with only a couple of minutes left on the clock to make the score 2-2.

The referees whistle brought the match to a close soon after, with both sides fairly happy with an opening day draw in such a tough encounter. The match was debated and dissected well into the evening afterwards at the Manakau Hotel.

Here we go Again

The Stade de Manakau was buzzing with players and supporters for the final pre season frendlies. Paekakariki were the visitors and as usual the games were palyed in a very positive manner. Manakau Hotel, who will be playing in Division 3 next year, opened the afternoons entertainment with a deserved victory over a spirited Harlequins team. Harlequins borrowed a few players with double goal scorer Ben McHugo being one. Huimai also won their encounter. Huimai will be playing in Division 2 and with a mixture of youth and experience expect the season to be as successful as their inaugural season last year. A summer of active recruitment has seen new players, retired players and players returning from breaks registering with the club. A local club for local players and families. Next week sees the opening competition games with a double header at the Manakau Domain. The first game kicks off at 12.30 with the second at 3.00pm Afterwards as normal the games will be dissected over a cold pint or two at the Manakau Hotel
