A stiff challenge by Waikanae Geezers proved a difficult task for MUFC on Saturday. The surface at Jim Cooke Park meant tight control and maintaining possession would be priority.
Starting at a brisk pace Waikanae controlled the early stages with MUFC struggling to hit their stride. Organised midfield and defence by MUFC appeared to switch to the momentum but a fortuitous strike from distance opened the scoring for the Geezers. Two more well taken strikes cemented the lead and a fourth before halftime flattered the home side.
MUFC started the second half positively with Mike Urlich testing the keeper from the half way line. More movement created space on the right where the ever present Mike Urlich crossed for Shaan Eagle to tap in from close range. Waikanae never looked to relax and continued to apply pressure with Mark and Ben competing to stem the free flowing football the home side were playing. A fifth goal sealed the victory for Waikanae Geezers who admitted the scoreline wasn’t a true reflection of the game.
The result sees Manaukau United into the Lawrie Plate where on Saturday 28th, MUFC travel to Mazengarb to take on KCU Barbarians in what should prove to be a battle with the previous record of Played 2 with 1 victory to either side.

Otaki Purutaitamu v MUFC
A 4 – nil defeat was not enough to dampen the spirits in the Manukau United camp on Saturday. Playing against first Division side Otaki Purutaitamu, MUFC created plenty of chances but failed to capitalize.
Purutaitamu, one of the fittest teams in the league, admitted they were pushed hard and could not relax throughout the game, with the result not reflecting how close the game was.
This weekend sees Manakau entertain Paekakariki Harlequins at the Manakau Domain. 2.30 kick off and as usual, after match in the Manakau Hotel.

Knock Out Cup Round 2
MUFC v KCU 3rds
A spirited MUFC returned to winning form with a 4-0 victory over 2nd division KCU 3rds in the 2nd round of the knock out cup.
Having enjoyed the luxury of a bye last week the Manukau team came out refreshed and played positive football from the kick off. The flare of youth against the more experienced KCU team proved to be an interesting battle with both teams looking to open the scoring.
Defence stood tall and midfield tackled hard as very little goal mouth action prevailed. Halfway through he first half Atain gave MUFC the lead with a well taken shot from right field. A late flurry in the home side penalty box was all KCU managed in the first half.
The break brought new life to KCU who pressed forward determined to equalize. A couple of corners in quick succession, followed by more pressure would have caused lesser teams than MUFC to crumble. Staunch defence and a willingness to put bodies on the line kept their opponents at bay.
Ollie made it 2 nil following a mix up in the KCU defence. The ball breaking free to Shaan Eagle, played Ollie into space who calmy lifted the ball over the advancing keeper. Another youngster, Jacko made it 3 with the ‘goal of the season.’ Picking the ball up on the right and running at pace, he beat the keeper with a ferocious drive into the top corner of the goal.
The day was capped off with an excellent header by Shaan. An inch perfect cross was met by the forward with venom, offering the keeper no chance as the onion bagged rippled.

MUFC v KCU Barbarians
A spirited KCU Barbarians handed Manukau United their first defeat at Stade de Manakau. The result leaves Manakau United Football Team as Runners-Up in Division 3.
Overnight rain had left the Manakau Domain heavy under foot presenting difficulties for players to play controlled football.
Both teams started positively and entertained the local crowd with some flowing football. The young KCU midfield showed speed but the more experienced midfield combination of Mike Urlich and Peter Rowe kept them at bay as KCU pushed to open the scoring. At the other end both Atain Hally and Shaan Eagle went close in a pulsating opening half hour to match.
The opening goal came from a KCU corner. Keeper Paddy Sanazzaro, returning after an injury break claimed the ball under pressure only for it to come free and be bundled into the net by the joyous KCU players.
The second half opened at a brisk pace with MUFC pushing hard to equalize. Mike Urlich striding forward pushed the defence to the edge of the box where the ball fell free to Jamie Allcock who struck the ball into the corner of the net. His second followed shortly afterwards with a header from a perfect cross delivered by Shaan Eagle.
The game opened up and chances fell to both KCU and MUFC. The ever present Peter Rowe providing a telling pass to release Shaan Eagle who drew an excellent save from the Barbarians keeper.
KCU were never out of the game and continued to press forward. The pressure resulted in a well taken equalizer from the edge of the box giving Sanazzaro no chance.
Both teams were now pressing for the winner and sadly for the Manakau team and supporters it was KCU who took their chance. Speed of youth playing a major part as they broke through the defence leaving one on one and again giving the keeper no chance with a clinical finish.
Willie West summed up in his after match speech at the Manakau Hotel what a wonderful first league season it had been and what a good game it was. ‘To finish 2nd in our first year is great. Well done to KCU for taking part in a great game, played in good spirit, with neither team wanting to give an inch.’
MUFC now look forward to the Knock Out stage of the competition where they have been drawn in Group 3. They will play Otaki Purutaitama, Waikanae Geezers, KCU 3rds & Pakakariki Harlequins.
This week sees Manakau with a bye, so watch this space for an update and further information about upcoming games.
